The main difference lies in the source and timing of the experience of stress and anxiety. Stress usually occurs in response to a specific, identifiable, and predictable pressure or trigger, whereas anxiety is more centered on worry about the future and uncertainty. As a result, both can be accompanied by a racing heart, restlessness, or sleep disturbances, but their roots are not the same. Stress is often triggered by “the occurrence of an event.” For example, an upcoming exam or a project deadline typically causes tension, and the intensity of symptoms decreases once that event passes. A common mental image of stress is a wave that rises as it reaches a sensitive point, then subsides. Anxiety, on the other hand, often activates “anticipation.” Even when the event has not yet happened or it’s unclear what will occur, worry can continue. In this situation, repetitive thoughts such as “what if something bad happens” may become more prominent, and the person may feel a constant state of readiness—like a warning siren that never turns off. The intensity of symptoms is often less dependent on the time when a specific trigger occurs, and more related to the level of worry about the future. Clear summary: Stress is usually a reaction to an external pressure or a specific event and decreases once it ends. Anxiety is more tied to worry and uncertainty about the future and can persist even without a clearly identifiable trigger.
